A Blog by Dr. Ed Marshall: How to Possibly Reduce Childhood Autism Safely and Sanely
In recent years, the national leader of an American Pediatrician’s organization totally refuted any suggestion of a connection between increased immunizations and vaccinations of infants and children with the increased incidence of autism in the last 2 to 3 decades.
And what was a main job of that pediatrician? He was the top consultant to large American pharmaceutical company producers of vaccines, mainly for children.
Could there have been a conflict of interest?
If you look at charts, or graphs, showing the rising incidence of autism, plotted on the same graph showing the rising increase in the number of immunizations given, including the number of immunizations per visit when those vaccines are given, those rising numbers match each other closely.
Does this prove that increased immunizations per doctor visit, or increased number in total immunizations per year, are the cause of increased autism? No, but it is certainly suspicious. And, since we have no other explanation for this increased incidence of an often terrible condition for the child, for the family, and for the entire country, why not try doing the immunizations differently?
There are people out there, almost none of them pediatricians or other types of medical doctors, who advocate giving infants and children no vaccines at all. So, that way, the lack of the known benefits of vaccines can result in outbreaks of serious illnesses and some deaths.
Why not do something more reasonable? I have been advising my family, friends, and in my days of practicing medicine, my patients, to do the following: Let your infants and children have all of the recommended vaccines, but limit the number of vaccines given on any one day to the numbers that were given several decades ago when there were very few cases of autism in the USA?
In those days, the most vaccines given on any one day was three, and in most cases only two were given on the same day. In those days there was a period of at least 6 weeks, usually longer, between immunization visits to the doctors. So I have advised everyone to get their pediatricians to go along with that program. To my knowledge, not a single such infant or child has shown any signs of autism over those past ten years or more.
Sure, those are only small numbers of cases, but what’s the harm? The children end up getting all the recommended vaccines, but, if this program is adopted on a large scale by the insistence of parents and by cooperative pediatricians, we could see a marked reduction in the number of new autism cases. After just a couple of years of doing immunizations this way, we should have a clear cut statistical answer.
Yes, it means more trips to the doctor to get the same number of shots, but that seems a lot smarter than either risking autism or risking the illnesses from withholding the vaccines.
And, yes, if the autism rate drops dramatically, some pediatricians and pharmaceutical companies could face malpractice lawsuits. In my opinion, those suits would not likely succeed if the pharmaceutical companies and the pediatric societies and their members cooperate and go along with my suggested different way of giving vaccines. After all, how could they have known that increased numbers of vaccines per visit would cause more autism? In fact, even if there is an association between the two, we don’t know the mechanism of how it happens. But, I’ll settle for prevention of the extra autism for now.
And, you guessed it, I am not a consultant paid by the pharmaceutical companies that make and sell the vaccines. I just want the best we can get for everyone… immunizations at a pace that does not exceed the pace we saw when there were fewer vaccines and fewer cases of autism, but not depriving our children or our society of the benefits of the vaccines.
I love it when there is everything to gain, for all involved, and essentially nothing to lose!
