The fact is that going to college right after high school can be a very bad mistake for many young people.
Every caring parent should ask their high schoolers, certainly by the beginning of the Junior year of high school,
if their teenager has thought about going to college. If they say they do or don’t want to go, ask them why. If they say they’re not sure or they don’t know, there are many aspects to discuss.
One of my uncles never finished third grade and became a multi-millionaire owner-starter of Baby Line Furniture Company. He had to help his parents on a farm in the Midwest and couldn’t go to school any more. He was a wonderful family man.
Others, like Bill Gates, became a computer expert while attending college and dropped out to follow his dream, or had other very good reasons not to start or not to complete college.
I wanted to be a medical doctor, so college was the way to get there.
Steven Spielberg was refused entry to USC film school, because he had “no talent” for fim, he was told. He sort of made it in the film business anyway, because that was what he really wanted to do, and he was evidently capable.
Many go to college and run up tremendously harmful student debts. Even if parents are wealthy enough to pay for college totally, why should their son or daughter go there with absolutely no idea of why. Many students get in trouble with alcohol, drug and sex problems while in college. And not only that, a very high percentage of college students leave college without graduating. And here’s the worst news: A majority of college graduates find that there are no really good and high-paying jobs waiting for them.
If you’re a high school student, and you know you want to be an engineer, a medical doctor or dentist, a lawyer, a teacher or professor, you have an excellent reason to go straight to college. If you have no idea why you are going to college, except to get more education or because your parents want you to go, maybe you can show them and yourself how you can do tremendous learning on the Internet and/or in libraries.
If you have a special talent, such as photography, or you’re an artist or a natural-born designer or musician, or you’re a talented singer or dancer, you may want to pursue a career right after high school, or even while you’re still in high school.
Guess what. Colleges and universities are not going to disappear. So, if you decide not to go straignt to college right after high school, and it’s for a good reason, you can always go to college later if that’s what you decide.
Be your own excellent life manager and make decisions that make sense for your life, if you’re the young person thinking about whether you should go to college. If you’re the parent, encourage your son or daughter to be that excellent manager of their own life. You can counsel and advise, but ordering and trying to totally control your teenagers is not likely to work well for you or for them.
